Hermanus is a Whale of a time!

It is the height of Whale season in Cape Town right now and the best time of year to take a drive to the town of Hermanus to get up close and personal with these gentle giants.  Every year the Southern Right Whales migrate to our waters to calf and mate.  Along with the Southern Right, Humpback and Brydes whales can also be seen off the coast.

One of the best ways to experience the whales is a boat ride out to view them up close.  The boats are not allowed to approach the whales closer than 50 meters but that doesn't stop these curious creatures from coming in for a closer look.  With the engines switched off, it is common for the whales to emerge right beside the boats, sometimes giving a spray that mists everyone on board!

Hermanus also hosts an annual Whale Festival which welcomes over 100,000 visitors each year.  With concerts, food, a classic car show and many other activities for kids and adults, the whale festival is definitely the highlight of the season!  This year's dates are October 3-6 and it promises to be fun for the whole family.  More information about the festival can be found here:  http://www.whalefestival.co.za
